Parent Resident Visa expression of interest (EOI) selection process

Your EOI goes into a queue or ballot depending on when we received it.

To apply for a Parent Resident Visa, you must first submit an expression of interest (EOI). If we select your EOI, we may invite you to apply for residence.

We select EOIs every 3 months from a queue and by ballot.

  • The queue contains EOIs received before 12 October 2022. The first selection was 14 November 2022.
  • The ballot contains EOIs received from 12 October 2022. The first selection was 8 August 2023.

Selections occur in February, May, August and November, and generally take place on the second Tuesday of the relevant month. There is an extra selection in October 2023 of EOIs received before 12 October 2022.

Queue for EOIs received before 12 October 2022

The queue contains EOIs received on or before 11 October 2022.

  • We select the oldest EOIs first from the queue.
  • The first selection was 14 November 2022.
  • We aim to select enough to reach 2000 visa approvals each year, until there are no EOIs remaining in the queue.
  • EOIs do not expire, but you can withdraw your EOI from the queue.

The number of EOIs we select is adjusted to account for the fact that some EOIs include 2 people, and some EOIs may not result in a visa approval.

The next selection will be in October 2023.

Ballot for EOIs received from 12 October 2022

We put EOIs received on or after 12 October 2022 into a ballot pool.

  • We select EOIs in a random selection every 3 months.
  • To be included in a selection your EOI must be submitted by the last day of the month before the selection. For example, submit your EOI on or before 31 July to be in an August selection.
  • We select enough to reach 500 visa approvals each year.
  • If you have an EOI in the queue (received before 12 October 2022) you can submit another EOI to the ballot.
  • EOIs in the ballot expire after 2 years.
  • You can submit your EOI online or using the paper form.
Note

You can only be included in 1 EOI in the ballot. If your EOI in the ballot pool includes someone in another ballot pool EOI, it is removed from the pool (and you will be notified).

The first selection was on 8 August. We selected 200 EOIs from about 6,000 EOIs that had been submitted by 31 July 2023.

There was an additional selection of 100 EOIs from the ballot pool on Tuesday 12 September.

What happens when your EOI is selected

  • Once EOIs are selected they go through a checking process. Checks generally take around 2 weeks. After we check your EOI you will either be invited to apply for residence or advised if your EOI will be declined.
  • We do not contact people whose EOIs are not selected.
